1984 Section Two, Part X Analysis (pp. 218-224)

This short section is fairly straightforward, but does contain some symbolism worth noting. Orwell has already established the painting and paperweight as symbols of the past and even humanity to some extent. Both these items are smashed by the Thought Police when Julia and Winston are captured. One reading of this is the triumph of the Thought Police over the spirit of Man through violent repression and mind control, including manipulating the past. This reading fits the overall disheartening concept of the novel. Also, the "prole" woman, who represents hope to Winston, is easily pushed aside and subdued (or worse) by the Thought Police, demonstrating they are still well in control.
