O'Brien is a member of the Inner Party, and a person to whom Winston always feels a strong connection. O'Brien lures Winston into believing he joins a resistance group known as the Brotherhood, but it is all an elaborate, seven-year set up. O'Brien acts as both a friend and an adversary to Winston, and it is he who finally breaks Winston down and forces him to love Big Brother.
