This section continues to show how O'Brien breaks down Winston through torture and use of "doublethink". The reader learns much of what was written in Goldstein's book concerning the existence of the superstates and state of modern science is true. The questions raised to Winston by the book are answered: the Party seeks power as an ends, not a means, that is, they seek it to possess it for the sake of possessing it. When Winston persists in saying the spirit of Man will overcome the Party, O'Brien shows him man is in a constant state of decay, and only the ideals of the Party are eternal. Winston cannot be converted as long as he felt he has not betrayed Julia, and he takes a certain comfort in that fact.
