Syme is a Newspeak linguist and the closest thing to a friend Winston has in the story (aside from Julia). Winston has a premonition Syme will be vaporized due to his intellect despite his complete loyalty to the Party. It is through the disappearance of Syme that O'Brien signals Winston for the first time, a sign Winston interprets as an invitation to join the Brotherhood.
